As I have been researching and trying MakerSpaces in my classroom, I came across a very exciting article posted by the county I teach for this week on MakerSpaces. My county now offers a middle school after school program to learn about technology such as green screens, 3D printers, robots and more. A teacher founded the MakerSpaces program that has seen more than 100 students participate. Some of the students in the group created a 3D printed invention that won them a trip to Baltimore and could save their school thousands of dollars. They used the 3D printer to create chair leg pads that prevent chairs from scuffing the floor. The students have been working on solutions to solve problems in schools.

I am so excited to see that my county is allowing their students the space to use innovative and emerging technology. They pose real life problems for the students to collaborate and solve. It gives the students hands on experience with trial and error and perseverance. This is a great opportunity for the students. I will include the article in the references page and linked here in case you would like to check it out.

  1. Hi Dana,

I really didn’t know much about MakerSpaces before this class, so I enjoyed reading your post. Hearing about the successes you and some of our other classmates have had with it has really peaked my interest. I can definitely see how MakerSpaces provide the 21st century STEM skills that are so important for students. Creativity and innovation often gets lost in the classroom, but this gives them the opportunity to use critical thinking skills and learn to solve problems while they work on projects that they enjoy and that they are interested in. Not all students learn the same way, and MakerSpaces seem like a perfect way to engage those that learn best through hands-on learning and experimentation. Your county’s after school program sounds amazing. It’s a great opportunity for students to access the latest technology and get experience working on real world problems. After reading about some of the things they are working on, I can understand why so many students want to join! Hopefully Makerspaces usage become more widespread as we hear more stories like this.
