MakerSpaces

This blog will be a place for me to share information about the emerging technology trend of MakerSpaces. I will be posting ways to integrate MakerSpaces into your classroom and how I intend to use it in my first grade classroom. Check out my infographic below to see what MakerSpaces are all about and the benefits.

In my first grade classroom I plan to make a designated corner of my room my MakerSpace. In that area I will have many different materials along with a computer for students to problem solve and manipulate. There will be engineering design posters up that remind them of the steps engineers take to solve problems. The most important part will be for them to persevere and improve their designs if they are not working. I will have different task cards with problems on them that they can choose from. They can work in pairs or groups to solve the problems and record their results. They can also take photos of their creations using the computer camera and post it to our classroom blog. I am so excited to see what they create.

Nicely done! I really think I might check that book out. I taught Kindergarten for 12 years and we started the engineering kit for Push, Pull, Go. In second grade we do Bridges. We just actually started the unit last week and we discussed the Engineer design process. What is the 1st grade engineering kit? Does it start talking about the design process in first grade, or is this just something you will add to your Makerspace?
ReplyDeleteHi Amanda, I want to get a copy of this book as well and look for some new ideas. We introduce the engineer design process this marking period in first grade although we had a Maryland STEM program come visit our class and explained it to the kids and let them try MakerSpaces already this year. It is nice that the students already will have an understanding of the process before trying MakerSpaces. We also use the book Rosie Revere Engineer to help explain it to the kids. It's a really cute book along with Iggy Peck Architect. You should check them out if you have never heard of them.
DeleteI will be looking into them today! That is so awesome to have that support come in already. Can't wait to see how it all works out!

ReplyDeleteHi Carley, thank you for enlightening me to maker spaces. I had a bias toward the concept of Makerspaces. For some reason I just didn't think there would be an application in my content in grade level. I was definitely wrong. Many of the digital tools you provide in your classroom would be possible for me to acquire. You addressed on of my concerns which is what to do about students that are not working and revising their product. Do you ever have students battling for the same maker tools? For example, do multiple students ever need to use the camera at the same time to complete their project?
DeleteThank you for your blog post. I will be actively looking to replace many of my traditional projects, such as lame posters, with technology based projects.
